Granite

Granite is a formed beneath the earth’s crust by magma flowing into deep pockets and cooling under tremendous pressure. It is highly crystallized and is comprised from Quartz, Feldspar and Mica. Polished granite is a popular choice for countertops due to its high durability and aesthetic qualities.

Granite has become the countertop of choice for today’s home owners. Synthetic solid surface materials are no match for the richness, depth, and incredible performance of real granite. Unlike laminates and solid-surface materials, a hot pot or frying pan has no effect on granite’s mirror-quality finish…

Marble

Marble will add a touch of class and elegance to your kitchen or bathroom countertop. A sedimentary stone that is formed from superheated limestone, which results in its crystalline structure. Marble is an igneous stone that occurs naturally through the metamorphosis of limestone. It contains many different compounds, but consists mainly of calcium carbonate which gives marble its generally light and creamy hue. Colour variations in white marble are caused by impurities from other substances.

Today, marble is used primarily in bathroom vanities, fireplace surroundings, hearths, and tile stone. The trend of using marble for kitchen countertops is slowly increasing. Marble’s elegance and beauty gives any home an appealing quality. It provides a pure, graceful look.

Quartz

There are many types of quartz which are constantly evolving as a result of technology. Quartz is a great choice for kitchens and bathrooms because it extremely hard and is stain, heat,   bacteria resistant. It’s both hard, flexible and lighter than granite which allows for easier   installation.

Quartz has a hard, nonporous surface, making it simple to clean. In most cases, soap and water or a mild detergent is all that is required to maintain its luster. If necessary, a non-abrasive cleaner such as Vim Oxy-Gel or a mild degreaser can be used. Adhered materials like food, gum, or nail polish can be scraped away with a plastic putty knife: any marks left by the blade can be removed. Thoroughly rinse the surface with clean water to remove residue…

Zodiaq Quartz Surface Logo
Zodiaq® Quartz was one of the first quartz surfaces on the market, in 2000. Engineered with pure quartz crystals, quartz countertops from DuPont™ Zodiaq® let you bring the best of both worlds – nature and science — to your kitchen, bath and throughout your home. Made with extremely hard quartz crystals, Zodiaq® keeps its good looks and survives the impact of nicks and cuts that can occur with daily wear and tear, minimizing short and long-term maintenance. Quartz is found in great abundance in the earth – it is naturally hard and scratch-resistant. Quartz even ranks a 7.0 on Moh’s Hardness Scale, which is used to measure the scratch-resistance of a material. Only diamonds, ranking 10, topaz, and sapphire are harder than quartz.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I have to seal my granite countertops?
You would want to seal your granite countertops about once a year depending on usage.
How do I know when it’s time to reseal my Granite Countertops?
If you sprinkle a bit of water onto your sealed granite tops and the water absorbs into the granite rather than beading off it is time to reseal. You will be able to tell if it has absorbed into your granite if it gets a bit darker than it was before when you sprinkled it.  Usually this will occur in high traffic areas like in front of your sink or beside the stove.
What type of Granite sealer should I use?
There are many different types of Granite sealer on the market right now, we recommend a granite impregnator. This will work its way into the cracks and pores in your granite countertop and prevent foreign material from entering.
Is applying sealer to my granite countertops difficult?
No, it is a very simple process that should take about ten minutes. Even for the DIY novice.
Why does it look like there are pits in my granite countertop?
Pitting is a characteristic of all granites. It is more prominent in some granite types. Pitting is explained as small, sometimes rough pock marks or indentions. This will not affect the durability of your granite.
Why does my granite top look like it has cracks?
These surface cracks are also know in the industry as Fissures. This is common in many granite types and do not in any way effect the integrity of your granite countertops.
What products should I use to clean my Granite countertops?
Use warm water with a mild soap is a great way to clean your granite countertops. Just use a sponge or soapy cloth and follow up with a dry cloth to prevent streaking.
Can I disinfect my Granite countertops?
Use antibacterial Windex or diluted bleach with warm water. Just wipe it on the Granite top and then a warm water cloth to prevent any hazing. Dry it totally with a dry cloth.
Why does my granite countertop feel like there is sand on it?
When there has been an installation in your home there may have been some fine granite dust created that can linger for days. Just clean with the methods outlined above and the problem should be solved.
Why does my granite countertop look hazy?
This is typically from cleaning your granite countertops but not completely drying it. Also it can be caused by using too much soap when cleaning your granite countertops. We recommend using a wet cloth followed by a dry cloth to get rid of the haze. Also sealing with a water based sealer can leave your granite countertops looking hazy.
Why is Granite good for kitchen counters?
Granite very resistant to scratching, staining and cracking and is impervious to the heat in your kitchen. This makes granite a great choice for kitchens work areas.
Can I damage my granite or quartz countertop?
Just like any solid surface you can damage it with blunt force. Granite has a crystalline structure that can chip if hit with sharp hard objects. It can in most cases be fixed with Epoxy.
Can I scratch my Granite countertop?
Typically it is difficult to scratch. It is highly resistant to scratching under ordinary use.
Can I cut directly on the surface of my granite countertop?
Granite is tougher than you knives, we would suggest that you always use a wooden or plastic cutting board to protect your knives from your granite countertop.
Can I burn my Granite countertop?
No, it is very resistant to heat.
Will my kitchen have seams?
Due to the sizes of granite slabs being limited sometime seams are unavoidable.  Another determining factor is the ability to get the piece into your house. If you have a u turn at the top of your stairs that may limit our ability to get around the corner with a 120” long piece. This will usually be identified by our template technician.
How much can my granite countertop overhang my cabinets by?
The maximum amount that we recommend unsupported is 12”. DO NOT STAND ON CANTELEVERED PIECES.
