Quartz countertops are a popular choice because they’re beautiful, durable, and don’t require much maintenance. They’re also stylish, coming in a variety of colours and designs. When ordering natural stone for the first time, most customers know they’ll have to make decisions on colour and design, but they don’t expect to be asked about their desired thickness. Knowing what thickness is right for you means examining your needs as well as the area the quartzwill be installed in.

The smallest size available is 1cm, which is popular for prefabricated quartz countertops. Their strength and durability, however, don’t meet the demands of most kitchens. Many contractors will use 1 cm counters to save money, even though they personally recommend a thicker cut.

There are two standard thicknesses that we suggest for quartz countertops, 2 cm and 3 cm. It is possible to choose a thicker cut or build up the edge to make it appear thicker; creating a more substantial look and feel. This guide will help you understand quartz counters and how to choose the best design and thickness for your home.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

  • THE SPACE: Quartz can be used throughout the home including the kitchen, bathroom, and bar. In bathrooms, most people choose a 2cm counter, because less is needed, both visually and functionally. In the kitchen, you can get away with 2cm, however, not only are thicker countertops on-trend right now, but the increased durability is usually preferred. For kitchen islands, it’s strongly recommended you choose the thicker option as it’s usually a centrepiece for kitchen chaos and when company comes.
  • YOUR BUDGET: It’s not surprising that the cost of a quartz countertop is dependent on its size. So it may be tempting to order a thicker cut, but be sure to discuss costs and your budget in advance.
  • YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD: There are some beautiful homes in Ottawa, and many communities have been undergoing renovations, increasing the value of their neighbourhood. Speaking to neighbours, friends and coworkers in the area is a great way to find out how what’s becoming standard in your community.

EDGE STYLE

The thickness of your quartz countertop can also depend on the style of edge you prefer. When looking at samples of edges, ask your stone provider if your desired edge is a good match for your desired thickness. Some popular edge styles you’ll want to check out include:

  • STRAIGHT EDGE: Which is actually a slightly rounded edge to reduce damage or injuries
  • FULL BULLNOSE: A popular selection because it curves on both corners, making it smooth all around.
  • HALF BULLNOSE: The top corner is rounded, creating a smooth transition to the bottom corner which is straight.
  • HALF BEVEL: An angular edge is featured on the top corner which adds a subtle, elegant design. It also improves functionality since it allows liquids to run through the edges, protecting the cupboards below.
  • DOUBLE BEVEL: Has the angled edge on both the top and bottom. It creates a reflective surface that seems to make the counter appear bigger
  • QUARTER ROUND: Also featuring a rounded corner on the top but the roundedness is smaller than the half bullnose.
  • OGEE/COVE DUPONT: A beautiful, premium edge choice that has an S-shaped curve, that looks elegant in any kitchen.
